There is lots of free help and support available for people wanting to lose weight safely.
If you are looking for advice on eating more healthily, getting a bit more exercise or setting some achievable goals, the NHS website is a great place to start.
For some people, additional support may be needed to help them to reach a healthier weight, and medication may be an option if clinically appropriate.
Patients will only be prescribed medicines that have been tested and proved to be safe and effective for use, and patients must meet specific criteria to be eligible for weight loss medications on the NHS.
Some of these medicines are currently only available through specialised hospital services, this includes the medication known as Wegovy which GP Practices are unable to prescribe at this time.
People seeking support to lose weight are initially encouraged to explore the range of resources available locally and online from the NHS, including:
- Free NHS weight loss plan for people looking to start moving more and eating healthier.
- Free NHS exercise videos from the comfort of your own home, choose from dance, yoga and more.
- Access 100 healthy recipes search by ingredient or cook time to find a new family favourite.
- There is also the Bury Live Well Service which is a free Bury Council service that promotes healthy and active living and helps people make positive changes.
If you have tried all of the above options and feel that you still need additional support for a health concern or medication enquiry, you can contact the Practice in the usual way.
