Batch prescriptions

Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD)

If you or someone you care for uses the same medicines regularly, you may be able to benefit from electronic repeat dispensing (Also known as batch prescriptions).

Electronic repeat dispensing allows us to issue prescriptions as a batch which is sent to your nominated pharmacy and dispensed at regular intervals. This means you won’t have to re-order or collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP practice every time you need more medicine.

You simply collect your regular medication from your usual pharmacy without having to contact the surgery to order it.

The batch can last for up to one year before patients need to be reviewed or have blood tests.

The pharmacy receives prescriptions in advance, so they have time to order stock and prepare the prescription before the patient arrives to collect.

The pharmacy checks the medicines are still safe and appropriate. When the last prescription is issued, the pharmacy informs the patient so they can contact the surgery for another set of electronic repeat prescriptions. You may need to be seen for a review before another batch of electronic repeat dispensing prescription is authorised.

Although, you do not have to get your medicines in this way. The NHS has advised that all suitable patients should be moved onto the electronic repeat dispensing system as soon as feasibly possible and, we are working in collaboration with local community pharmacies to increase the number of patients on eRD. This will help to better manage workload in GP surgeries and pharmacies
